Just another Friend- A short story

Just another Friend
For her he was the most handsome person on earth. She had given away her heart on the very first day of college when she had seen him. She remembered with a smile the day when they had spoken for the first time and shaken hands. It all felt like a dream to her. He seemed to have just walked out of her dreams and was standing before her. She had to pinch herself really hard to believe this was really happening.

They were a part of the same group which ensured she got to see him and speak to him daily even if it was just a “Hi”. She relived that one moment a zillion times daily in her mind gushing to herself. She existed in a make-believe world of herself where it was only two of them. Every day she would not ask for anything else but to just make him hers, forever. Day & night she prayed hard for her dreams to come true.

Sometimes she felt her liking and love was turning into an obsession but she was okay with it as she could not think about a moment without him. She never believed in love at first sight till she met him. She thought all this crap exists only in romantic novels and movies. But he proved her wrong. His melting eyes along with the cute dimpled smile could make one believe into anything.  Her every waking moment was spent thinking about him and admiring him. And in the moments when she was not awake she would dream of beautiful tomorrows they would have together. She was so sure they would be one that sometimes it was scary to imagine What if?

Her prayers were answered one night when she got a friend request from him on Face book. Exactly till moment she thought he was hardly aware about her existence. But she had faith on her love and this had proved her faith to be correct. ‘He notices me…’ she thought ‘…..and wants to be friends.’ She was both ecstatic and thrilled about this. There was so much that she wanted to tell him and so many things that she wanted to hear from him. But she convinced herself that the time for it was yet to come. She remembered having read somewhere Friendship is the first step towards love. This was the first step towards what seemed to be the realization of her dreams.

One friend added as the screen read she smiled and said nodding her head;
No……. he is not just another friend. He is much more than that. He is my love, my life.

For him she was Pooja’s friend Chasme Badoor  - a tom boyish girl with spectacles.   Though she was a part of their group she barely made her presence felt. Like a typical nerd, she was constantly engrossed in some book or was in her imaginary world dreaming things which only she could understand. She would only be there in person, her mind always floating around somewhere because of which it was very easy to not notice her in the crowd. While on the other hand, her friend Pooja was a cute looking chatter box who could talk nineteen to dozen without blinking her eyes.

Oh my God how can someone be so gorgeous he thought as he remembered ‘her’ pretty face once again. It was love at first sight for him. She was wearing his favourite colour – Blue that day he clearly remembered. It was a windy day making tiny wisps of hair falling on her face. She seemed to be fidgeting with them to keep them away. ‘Excuse me….’ She had asked him ‘1st year Economics?’ That was their first meeting which gradually led to many such meetings.

It was at one such meeting that she introduced him to her best friend Chasme Badoor. He could not even remember her name. For that matter he hardly heard anything when she used to talk. He was too lost in her sweet voice and honey coloured eyes to notice anything else at all. He was completely smitten by her and tried giving subtle hints to her but she never got them. He was dying to meet her alone and know her better. But she always seemed to bring her best friend along. They were literally inseparable just like Siamese twins. He resented her for being the hurdle in his budding love story. But for her pretty friend he would not have even spoken to her.

But as fate would have had it tables were turned on him. Despite various attempts when he could not manage to speak to Pooja his friends suggested him to befriend Chasme Badoor and keep her in good books. Then through her he can gradually win Pooja over. However much irritating he found this idea; somewhere deep down he felt this could work out. He began to make deliberate attempts to speak to her and till now he was managing the befriending part very well. Today when after 3 months he had gathered the courage to send Pooja a friend request on Face book he dare not ignore her best friend. ‘What the heck’ he thought ‘when will all this end’. He detested doing this but he had no option.  This was the only way he could get to ‘her’ he sighed as he clicked on Add friend. For him she was nothing more than just another friend who would help him touch the heart of Pooja.
